Glass beads have been in use as jewelry, probably as a substitute for the rare and expensive gemstones, for centuries. There is evidence of a method known as 'core forming' in Mesopotamia in 2340 B.C. where a metal rod with pieces of glass was held over a fire; as the glass softened, they were worked into intricate ornaments that were treasured by their owners so much that people were buried with them. Although glassmaking has been an art and an industry in Europe, particularly Venice, since the 11th century, it was the return of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo and his father in 1294, which provided the impetus for the widespread development of the glass bead as ornamental jewelry. Returning from...

I recently had a chance to talk to Chris Ronneseth of Trek Holidays (see interview preview) who gave me a good overview of adventure travel, an area of travel I definitely would like to explore sooner than later... 1. Tell us how you got into the adventure travel business. I grew up around travel. My father, Allan Ronneseth founded the company in 1972 and with a passion to see the world in a different way than the norm, we had the opportunity to travel to countries that were considered exotic at that time and to some extent still are today. Venturing out on my own traveling while attending University I became more and more passionate about the world beyond North America. With a degree in marketing...

Whenever we hear Philippines, we think of luscious forests, warm smiles of Filipinos and white sand beaches. Speaking of beaches, Boracay always comes to your mind as a beach-freak. Aside from the infamous Boracay, there are other white sand beaches in the tropics. Pamalican Island, apart from Boracay, is a small island that belongs in Cuyo Group of Islands located at the heart of Palawan and Panay. It is also the home of the high-end Amanpulo Island Resort. Having the name Amanpulo (which means peaceful) spells it's true meaning and added to that feature is it's alluring beauty and tranquility. However, to transport tourists from Manila to the island, there is always an airplane standing by. It is...

People say that if you want to buy low-priced electronics, you need to go to Singapore or Hongkong; for bargain woodwork, you need to visit Jakarta or Bangkok; for clothes and shoes sale, you need to travel to Manila; and jewelry from Dubai. Think about it, though - if you factor in the travel costs, how much will you actually be paying for these items? Does this mean, however, that the buy and sell business would be seasonal, depending on when you can go on vacation to Asia? With the dawn of the internet, you do not have to personally travel to enjoy huge discounts. Truly lower cost products can be purchased online and delivered directly to a buyer's doorstep at much lower cost than it would be to...
