Hi I would like to talk to you about Winter Diving. Most people get shivers up their spine just thinking about taking the plunge into water temps of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius but in all honesty this has to be one of the best times to go exploring. You see, with the colder water we get a higher visibility. Even though the fish numbers are down this time of year, there are sights that you may miss at other times of the year. My Favorite places to dive include the stunning Poor Knights Islands and the Alderman islands along with our shipwrecks like the former HMNZS Canterbury located at Deep Water Cove in the bay of Islands. Oh and we must not forget the Rainbow Warrior up in the Cavalli Islands...

Where is Watson Lake Signpost Forest? Who started Watson Lake Signpost Forest and why? Let's see if we can answer the above questions. During our RV trip to Alaska, in the summer of 2006, we visited the Signpost Forest, Watson Lake, YT, Canada. The town is located at mile marker 635 of the Alaskan Highway. The Signpost Forest was started in 1942 by a member of the U. S. Army Engineer, 341, Company "D" which was part of a large contingency sent to construct the Alaskan Highway. Bare in mind that in 1942 this area was a vast wilderness. There really wasn't anything for the soldiers and engineers to do other than work. Many became homesick. One such individual was Carl K. Lindley. He decided to post a...

The Kenya safari circuit is one of the best in Africa containing national parks and game reserves that consistently provide great wildlife sightings and experiences coupled with high quality accommodation. Here is a list of the best places to visit during an African safari tour to Zimbabwe. The Eastern Highlands: The eastern border of Zimbabwe has a long range of beautiful rugged mountains running from north to south, covering a distance of about three hundred kilometers. These are known as the Eastern highlands and acts as a natural border with Mozambique. The Eastern Highlands are different from the gentle rolling landscape near Nyanga or the fierce granite spikes of Chimanimani. The landscape of this place is breathtaking which gives one the feeling that he/she is in Scotland and not Africa. Here you can see many herds of antelopes. You can enjoy spending your time here by golfing, fishing and...

Years ago when we took a trip from Chicago to Rome, our airplane had a stopover in Amsterdam, Holland. We found out the plane was going to be in Amsterdam for about three hours. Fortunately, a friend of mine had told me that I should bring just a few dollars in local money that could be used in Amsterdam. When the plane landed, we immediately left the airport and went and boarded a bus. We were not familiar with the city and we did not speak the language. When we boarded the bus I produced my Guilders, and we went to sit down. There was an American couple behind us who pulled out a dollar bill and the driver wouldn't accept it. But this other couple said they thought we looked like we knew where we...

September, 1814 - Fort Erie, Niagara Region - Canada - The battle rages on. British troops maintain their hold on the Northeast corner of the fort and continue to fire cannonballs into the American defenders. The rest of the fort belongs to those flying the Stars and Stripes, but the redcoats continue to fight as the death toll nears 2000 men. Seemingly oblivious to the chaos around him, one young soldier calmly shaves another, chatting merrily about prospects when the war is over. The streaking cannonball takes them both out, decapitating the soldier being shaved and blowing off the hands of the shaver before crushing his chest. Then the powder magazine explodes and the scene gets eerily quiet as...

Ziwani Tented Luxury Camp Kenya Ziwani camp is a pleasant tented Kenya Luxury Camp on the western boundary of Tsavo West National Park, not far from the Tanzanian border. It is in an undeveloped part of Ziwani Sisal Estate, on the edge of a small natural- looking dam in the Sante River. Clumps of papyrus grow in the dam, tall trees fringe the far banks, and lawns extend from the Kenya lodge to the water. Birds are everywhere-ducks swim past the papyrus, a fish eagle perches on a fallen tree trunk, large marabou stork putters about in the shallows. There are monkeys playing in the trees, and you can sometimes see hippos and crocodiles in the water. At night, bait is up for a leopard on the far side...

Citizen Tourism is a lot like ecotourism except that instead of helping the environment, people are helping the community in which they live. Locally, on the state or federal level, opportunities exist for people to make a fellow citizens life better, their city or state prettier and this nation a better place for our children and grandchildren. The site serve.gov is easy to use and allows you to search opportunities across the United States by location or by interest, so you can even determine your destination by the type of service you would like to provide. Use the site to check locally and see if there is some type of volunteer work you could provide to assist local citizens or improve your...

After approximately 6 hours drive through the hottest, most barren spot on earth, my friend Ehsan and I feel no exhaustion at all. We take a break; indeed nothing is more refreshing than a cup of Ahmad tea. A few minutes later we hit the newly constructed road to Khur and Biabanak once again, almost mesmerized looking at this wide span of desert with gently rising hills all around us. Here we see a water reservoir in the most desolated of all places. And there a triangular road sign warns drivers to beware of wandering camels that may cross the road. The route we follow is supposed to take us to Mesr village, which is famous for its thriving camel ride tours. It was dark when we entered a wide track...

Of the approximately 15 worldwide species of penguins, five are prevalent in South America, among them the Gentoo, Rockhopper, King, Macaroni, and Magellanic, the latter of which comprise the largest group and can be viewed at the Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery on the eastern coast of Argentina. Access, via Trewel, requires an Argentinean domestic flight or cruise ship stop in Puerto Madryn, followed by a two-and-a-half hour drive, by rental car or sightseeing tour, to the actual rookery. During an early-2007 trip, I made this very sea-and-land excursion. I have heard people that say they have not seen their own country and that is why they will not travel abroad. My honest reaction is that they will seldom see their own country. The reward is simply not that great. This does not say your own country is not good enough. I simply say the two are not the same. But that is a choice and if you wish then go and see your own...

Bridges are all about connecting things together. Sometimes a train will need to cross an obstacle, sometimes it is vehicles or sometimes it is just pedestrians. In the case of the Bach de Roda bridge in Barcelona, there was a need to move both people and vehicular traffic across a large expanse of railway tracks. In this instance, the trains were the problem, not the solution. The design for this new bridge incorporated twin pairs of supporting steel arches. The inner pair are mounted vertically and suspend their share of the load (mainly the roadway) via the typical steel rod. The outer pair of arches are quite different. These arches lean in toward the center arches, and are in fact welded to the...

Peruvians love Americans, but I fear the Americans are starting to be quite rude, belligerent, and down right pigs. It is almost daily I see this now; loud and rowdy Americans in the nice outdoor restaurants, having contests with eating Ginny pigs, and eating them like a cow would hay, shoving it down and screaming to the tops of their lungs, while on lookers can't believe their eyes; Peruvians have...
